Angel investor

An individual who invests personal capital in early-stage businesses, directly or alongside other investors.

Angel investor in round numbers

Hypothetical primary equity investment: an angel invests US$50,000 into a startup in exchange for newly issued shares representing 10% of ownership immediately after the investment. This is a simple equity issuance, not a secondary purchase or a convertible instrument.
