Capitalized wages

Qualifying labor costs included in an asset’s cost under the applicable accounting rules rather than immediately expensed. Capitalization can be legitimate; eligibility and subsequent expense recognition must be assessed.

Capitalized wages in practice

Hypothetical: employee work directly creates an asset and meets the applicable capitalization criteria. Eligible wages become part of its carrying amount, with later expense through depreciation, amortization, cost of sales or impairment as appropriate. The wage cash outflow still occurs. Any current-period profit difference depends on the expense recognized in that period.
