Gatekeeper
An advisor or consultant that screens investment options for an institutional investor. It may recommend managers or exercise delegated investment authority, depending on its mandate.
Gatekeeper in practice
Hypothetical: a pension investor asks an advisor to assess buyout managers against its mandate. Portfolio-company evidence can help evaluate a manager’s track record and process. A favorable recommendation does not itself guarantee an allocation.
