MECE
Mutually exclusive, collectively exhaustive: categories cover a defined universe without overlap, using a consistent assignment rule.

MECE in practice
Hypothetical: an analyst defines the universe as all costs in one annual ledger. Materials and labor have explicit definitions; overhead covers every remaining cost. Freight must be assigned exactly once under that rule, possibly within overhead. Asking where freight belongs is a check, not proof that the categories omitted it.
