Mediation

A process in which a neutral person helps the parties try to agree on a settlement.

Mediation in practice

Hypothetical example: a buyer asks for payment after finding an unpaid supplier bill. A mediator helps both sides explore a settlement, but cannot force them to accept it.

What to check

If the parties settle, record what they agree to do. A signed settlement can create binding duties even though the mediator did not impose a decision.
