Playback / play back

Factual definition

To play back is to repeat back what a client or teammate just said, confirming shared understanding before moving forward.

Confirm the client’s supplier concern before recording it

Hypothetical: after a client explains a supplier dependency, an analyst summarizes the concern in her own words and asks the client to confirm or correct the interpretation before it enters the memo.

Leave room for the other person to correct you

Hypothetical exchange.

Client: “We buy that material from two mills, but only one is approved for the premium product.”

Analyst: “So there are two suppliers overall, but the premium product currently depends on one approved source. Is that the dependency you want us to investigate?”

Client: “Yes. The second mill can make it, but our customer has not approved its material yet.”

The analyst can now record an approval dependency instead of assuming that the second mill lacks the technical ability.

A useful playback makes an interpretation visible while it can still be corrected. It confirms what the speaker means; it does not independently verify that the speaker’s description is true.

The approval status would still need evidence.
