Uncertainty Is Toxic

Factual definition

Uncertainty Is Toxic is the management principle expressing the view that people absorb bad news but cannot absorb not knowing whether bad news is coming.

The example of uncertain employment news

Being terminated is bad news a person can process. Sitting in a company that feels unstable, without being told, is the part that does the damage.

How Shayne Fitz-Coy uses Uncertainty Is Toxic

The uncertainty is what gets people. The not knowing is what gets people.

People can handle negative news. What they cannot handle is uncertainty about negative news.

Anything you can do to give people comfort and certainty is what you as leaders in your business can offer. Give them certainty.

Give them confirmation.

Be clear about what is known and what is next

Hypothetical management update.

“We are reviewing the service schedule. No decision has been made about changing shifts.

We will finish the review Friday and update everyone that afternoon, even if some questions remain open.”

This statement offers a known process and a next update without promising an outcome that has not been decided. The manager must then keep that commitment and explain any delay.

If something is undecided, saying so is more accurate than reassuring people that nothing will change.

The teaching is useful as a communication discipline: distinguish the decision already made, the question still open and when people will hear more. It should not be used to claim that everyone reacts to bad news in the same way or that all uncertainty can be removed.
